More Information: | Pulicat Lake, straddling the border between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu near Chennai, is India’s second-largest brackish-water lagoon after Chilika Lake. Covering around 759 km², it’s a mosaic of shallow waters, mudflats, mangroves, and barrier islands. Recognized as an Important Bird Area, Pulicat hosts over 220 bird species, with around 60–80 migratory species visiting annually. You can spot flocks of greater flamingos (up to ~15,000 wintering individuals), pelicans, storks, spoonbills, herons, ducks, terns, waders, raptors, and more. Rare sightings include species like the bar-tailed godwit—notably, a group of five was spotted together, an unusual event. Pulicat Lake is a dynamic, vibrant ecosystem at the crossroads of seasonal bird migration. Whether you're a casual nature lover or serious birder, the blend of natural beauty, diverse bird species, and cultural awareness efforts makes it a rich and rewarding visit. Best season: October to March, when migratory birds flock here––ideal conditions for birding and photography. Another part is in Andhra Pradesh. There is an island named Atakanithippa from where people get the best view of rocket launching in Sriharikota. In Tamilnadu side they cover specifically 2 sides. One is towards Andhra border and another one is towards confluence in Tamilnadu. In this kind of boat safari I notice one thing is common everywhere. Group of similar bird species have their certain territory as per food source. What I meant is small waders like sandpipers or plovers will find the edge of sand bed or moss covered wetland. Whereas big birds like Flamingo, ibis or herons find shallow water body so that the submerged areas are visible to them. Terns mostly prefers pole so that they can aim fishes from top. Then gulls will select costal edges and like to be together with small waders. All these small facts are clearly visible to me and I can enjoy watching them all day long. |
