How to go: | This is the private car route from Kolkata: On the way you can visit Pingla - Patachitra Village (Patachitra Village), to reach Sabang from Balichak railway station. By public transport from Howrah one can get train for Kharagpur and get down in Balichak railway station, from there one can get treaker or bus. You have to get down on Chandkuri Bus Stop and then you have to get toto for the location. |

More Information: | Madur is a traditional and pride of Midnapur district in southern Bengal. This is basically floor mat which we use in our home in various purpose. Day by day the the variety of Madurkathi products has been increased as per people requirement and the products are getting spread out around the world. Madurkathi is a very eco friendly material which has been extracted from rhizome based plant which are found abundantly in rural area of Midnapur. The land and climate are pretty much favourable to grow these plants in that region. The people who are associated with this craft has reaped the rhizomes for 3-4 years and stored it. This craft has been originated in back to the Muslim period. In the dynasty of Nawab Alibardi Khan, mats were collected as revenue of the Jaigirdari system. Now a days 70% of population of Midnapur are into this profession. Most of the household women take initiative of weaving the mats and making various products. Main seasons for cutting the sticks are April-July and September-November. Best quality Madur sticks are reaped during the September-November season. Hub and markets of Madurkathi Craft There are several Mat units in Purba as well as Paschim Midnapur. Patashpur, Egra, Moyna, Bhagabanpur from Purba Midnapur and Sabang, Pingla, Debra and Narayangarh are the main villages and blocks which are the specialists of various purpose of Madurkathi products. Various products are like fold mats, traditional mats, bags, folders, curtains, gifts box, table mats and many more products. Sabang Hut Sabang in Paschim Midnapur is the wholesale market of raw Madur sticks. The market remains open throughout the year. Cultivators from both Purba and Paschim Midnapur districts bring their produce to Sabang. Bulk transactions take place on Tuesdays every week. The sticks are being purchased by dealers who collect these for reselling and by producers for their own use. Raw materials like thread, dye and cloth is procured by units producing diversified mat products. The main market for procuring the raw material is at Radhamoni Haat in Tamluk. Important stuff This products are being sold in right price if you wish to go to the unit directly. Those products are being sold in much higher price in Crafts fairs which are being organised in various location in Kolkata. So if you wish to experience the art you should go to the village itself and see their work, talk to them and gain gain knowledge and their work.
