More Information: | Murudeshwar Temple is famous for being the world’s second-tallest Shiva statue where largest one is Vishwas Swaroopam Shiva statue situated in Rajasthan. The Temple is built with a mixture of modern and traditional architecture. The Shiva statue is 123 feet tall and built by the Shivamogga’s Kashinath and financed by businessman Dr. R.N. Shetty. The total cost of construction was 50 crores rupees, and it took 2 years to get completed. There is a story on how Atma Linga formed in Murudeshwara. The story is derived from Ramayana where Ravana meditated for Atma-Linga that is the soul of lord Shiva and asked for it. Aab Shiva to Bhole baba hai hi.. Being pleased Lord Shiva blessed him with what he desired with one condition that it shouldn’t touch the ground at any cost. Later lord Ganesha realised the consequences that it can be threat for Earth if Ravana acquired that. So he tried to take it from Ravana and touched it into ground disguises himself as a Brahmin. By this act Ravana got angry and try to uproot the Linga from the ground. As a result it divided in five parts and landed over 5 different spot developing a chain of temple which is called Panch- kshetras. Sri Murudeshwar Temple is one of the five Temples famous in Karnataka as the Pancha Kshetras of Lord Shiva. The other four Temples are in Nanjanagud, Dharmasthala, Dhareshwara, and Gokarna. |
