More Information: | Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is said to be the main festival in Maharashtra and the craze of the festival spreads many other adjacent states including Karnataka. So people might have seen in television or news channel the major wave of celebration in Maharashtra but there are few places in Karnataka which left unnoticed forever. Cubbonpet in Bangalore is one of those. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi finds its origin in the Maratha reign, with Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj starting the festival. The belief lays in the story of the birth of Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Although there are various stories attached to his birth, the one most relevant is shared here. Once Parvati was taking birth, by the time Ganesha was born. As a child Ganesha was asked by lord Shiva to guard the door until Parvati finished her bath. When lord Shiva returned, little Ganesha denied him to enter into the door as he was instructed. Due to this incident Lord Shiva got very angry and chop off Ganesha’s head. By this incident Parvati got heartbroken and demanded a new head to be found for Ganesha. But no one was able to find a head which can fulfill her demand. All of a sudden an elephant’s head was being found and they decided to place it on Ganesha’s body. Now come to the location of Cubbonpet where I am visiting today to watch this auspicious festival. If you want to go Towards Majestic bus stand in Bangalore, you need to pass through corporation circle which is pretty much famous joint for govt organisations. From there if you take KM Naganna road which is parallel to District office road, you will reach Cubbonpet main road. From Corporation circle you can walk down towards North-West to reach to the destination. Around 400 families live in that area and house-arrest of the local people occurred for a week-long due to the festival. Most of the lanes are getting blocked due to numerous pandals installed. Thought the festival is celebrated in different parts of the the country, Ganesh Chaturthi has its own unique charm in Karnataka. And the celebrations in Bangalore are entirely based on tradition and spirituality. Devotees get ready in the morning to visit the iconic temples of the city to pay their respects to Ganesha. Shri Jambu Ganpati Temple, Ananth Nagar Ganpati Temple, and Panchamukha Heramba Ganapati Temple are renowned places where spectacular celebrations occur. The immersion rituals performed at the Sankey Tank and Ulsoor Lake draw a large crowd of devotees every year. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this festival will be organised in a simple manner in 2021. The government has banned the processions, considering the safety guidelines. People can immerse the idols at the designated spot without massive crowds. For Cubbonpet ganesh chaturthi festival, don't try to reach out too early thinking that you can avoid croud. It's better to start after 7 pm on the same day as most of the pendal doesn't get completely decorated before that time. Everywhere you will find crowd, people enjoying with friends and family, dancing with grooves, eating street food which definitely creates joy inside you. Even though the area is a bit messi, still you will get different flavor for this festival. So the main concept is there are 17 colonies on that road and each colony celebrate the festival with fair competition and that draws the attention every year. More than 30 idol you can hop in that place still this area is a bit under cover. That's why I tried to visit the area this time. |
