More Information: | Shantiniketan was founded and developed by members of the Tagore family. It was founded by Debendranath Tagore.[2] Rabindranath Tagore wrote many of his literary classics at Santiniketan.[18] His son, Rathindranath Tagore was one of the first five students at the Brahmacharya asrama at Santiniketan.[19] After the death of his father in 1941, Rathindranath took over the burden of all responsibilities at Santiniketan. When Visva Bharati was made a central university in 1951, Rathindranath was appointed its first vice-chancellor. Pratima Devi, Rathindranath's wife, had active links with Visva Bharati from a very young age. She lived in Santinketan till her death in 1969. Mira Devi, Rabindranath's youngest daughter, after her failed marriage, lived in Malancha built for her in the Ashrama complex in 1926. She died at Santiniketan in 1969. Krishna Kripalani, husband of Nandita (Buri), daughter of Mira Devi, taught at Santiniketan for nearly 15 years, beginning 1933. Krishna Kripalani's biography of Tagore was amongst the best ever written. Dwijendranath Tagore, Rabindranath's eldest brother, spent the last twenty years of his life at Santiniketan. He lived in Dwaijaviram in the Ashrama complex. Dinendranath Tagore, Dwijendranath's grandson, was principal of Sangit Bhavana in its earliest years. Dinantika, built in 1939, housed the Cha chakra, where staff members of Visva Bharati met over a cup of tea for meetings and relaxation. Indira Devi Chaudhurani, daughter of Satyendranath Tagore, started living in Santiniketan in 1941 and took charge of Sangit Bhavana. She was acting vice-chancellor for a short period. Supriyo Tagore, great grandson of Satyendranath, was a student of Patha Bhavana and Visva Bharati University before going abroad to complete his education. He retired as the longest serving principal of Patha Bhavana. He now runs Sisu Tirtha, an institution for orphans mainly from the economically disadvantaged tribals, near Santiniketan. His son, Sudripta, with wide-ranging experience in the field of education, is also engaged in setting up a school, at Ruppur near Santiniketan, embodying the ideas of Rabindranath. Most rushful time of the year. 1. Pous mela (December) 2. Basanta Utsav (March) Tips: 1. It is safe to book train and hotel ticket atleast before 3 months. 2. It is hard to manage to get the ticket if the hotel is not booked, but train ticket can be manageable by doing the break journey i.e. via Burdwan. It may take total 4 hours to reach Santiniketan. 3. I would recommend to follow http://chhutiresort.co.in/ to get an extremely delightful experience in these events. Obviously I booked this resort previously. I strongly recommend to take the food facilities from this place. 4. Hire car for 5 hours basis to cover all the places in two days. My suggestion would be on the first day, visit Khoai-kopai-Majhipara-Amar Kutir-Sonajhuri(Belasheshe house) side. On second day visit the whole Viswa Bharati campus with proper guide(They will charge around 300rs.) and also Rabindra museum(Timing upto 3:30pm and fare 40 Rs./adult) and finish those within 5 hours. Start journey from the hotel around 9 am to cover 5 hours nicely. 5. Remember nothing will work as the darkness begins. So enjoy Santiniketan in day timing. 6. The car you will hire they will charge 1500rs for 5 hours. So definitely if you are going with 6/7 friends you will enjoy the most. LOL. 7. In Pous mela season you can visit mela in evening time and enjoy the famous performances(Baul performance, lokgiti, tribal dance, play etc) as well as shopping. 8. REMEMBER IN FESTIVE SEASON THE TOTO DRIVER WILL SCREW YOU OUT BY ASKING OFFENSIVE AMOUNT. |
