More Information: | Har Ki Pauri is the most incredible tourist destination in Haridwar. It is the place where people can visit in search of peace and spend week and come back, People can also make it a gateway of Rishikesh, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Pancha Kedar and so many holy places. Haridwar also termed as 'Gateway to Gods' is known as Mayapuri, Kapila, Gangadwar as well. How it formed It is said that while Samudra Manthan, the celestial bird Garuda carried Amrit in a pitcher and passing by. That time drops of Amrit fall over from the sky in Nasik, Ujjain, Allahabad and Haridwar. So this place became very auspicious. That’s why it is also called wor Brahamakund ghat. Hence thousands of people take dip into the water of Ganga to wash away their sins or Karma and seek for Moksha. Talking about how it is named Har Ki Pauri! It is said that king Vikramaditya's brother, Bhartrihari, had meditated on the banks of the holy river Ganga for several years. After his death, the great king built this ghat in his memory. That’s why is was named as Hari-ki-Pauri. Har means Lord Shiva, Ki means ‘of’ and Pauri means steps. That’s why Har Ki Pauri is also said to be the Gateway to the Lord. This is one of the places in India when Kumbh mela has been celebrated every 12 years and Aardh Kimbha Mela in every 6 years. It is believed that Maa Ganga visits her paternal house on the day of Dussehra and returns on the day of Bhai Dooj. During that time due to cleaning, authority dried the water of the river and before one day of Diwali they release the clean water with full flow. Templs in Har Ki Pauri ghat I couldn’t notice in my childhood that in the steps of ghats several temples were built and now I came to know Pandit Hargyan Singh Katara, a Zamindar of Agra in 1938 extended the ghat area and built the temples and later those were renovated. Now a days if you go to Haridwar you will find ample number of temples in Har KI Pauri ghat and those looks so colorful at a glance. Few temples pinnacles are very remarkable and can be noticed from long distance. You will find Sant Valmiki, Hanuman Ji. Radha Krishna, Maa Ganga, Ganesh ji. Mahadev, Vishnu ji, Laxmi mata, Maa Kali and lot more god and goddess temples. Also you will find lot of platforms for priests for performing various Puja. Market of Haridwar Another greatest attraction of Haridwar is its massive market area. Ohhh bhai, once you visit I bet your pocket will be getting empty. Those shops will attract you now and then to buy something. Mostly you will find clothes, religious saman, food and household stuff. The entire market looks very colourful and photogenic. Most of the shops use online payment now a days. So carry a big shopper and start shopping guys. Taking about nearby attractions, One can visit Manasha devi Temple, Vaishno Devi temple, and Lord Shiva statue on the other side of the river. Food Being a bengali I always remember Dada boudi hotel for lunch and dinner. By paying 80 rs you will find bashkati rice, ghee, ghee flavoured green chili, Beguni, mung daal, 5 mishali sabji, alu gobi sabji, chatni and papad. There are total 5 dada boudi hotels in one row. I went to the oldest one. Except that you will find many other food shops , I would say don't make boundary, visit various food stalls to understand the variety of food. Haridwar is famous for various sweets, Rabri, Khir Lassi and many more. All you can get inside the market area. Also try road side dry food and Agra Petha. I feel i would not mention all, visit Har Ki Pauri once and get that experience. Another information is Haridwar bus stand and Haridwar railways station is around 2 km away from the ghat so you can easily reach down by walk. Inside the city for communication you can avail Rickshaw, Auto, Battery bar toto and trekker. |
