More Information: | To be frank we went to Eravikulam national park for birding but due to it’s exceptional beauty I thought it should be documented as an individual travel destination. Visiting Eravikulam national park is a must do thing if someone visit Munnar. To reach out this national park you have to take authorise buses from which starts here frequently. Private car Parking is there inside the complex. Eravikulam National Park, having an area of 97sq. km, is the first National Park in Kerala. It was notified in 1978 to protect the endemic and endangered Nilgiri Tahr and its habitat. The park has the largest stretch of undisturbed montane shola-grassland eco system in the Western Ghats. Anamudy (2695 m.), the highest peak of south Himalayas, is located within the park. Neelakurinji is a gregarious flowering shrub, seen only in the upper grasslands of the western ghats usually at high altitudes above 1200 meters. Neelakurinji have only one chance to reproduce in the life cycle with synchronized flowering and mass seeding once in 12 years. After flowering and seed dispersal, the plants perish away, but the dispersed seeds germinate in the following monsoon and continue their life cycle for the next 12 years. Neelakurinji is an entomophilous plant that means a plant which is pollinated by insects plant and the main pollinator is Indian honey bee. The Nilgiri Tahr is an endangered species by the IUCN. It is closely related to the Himalayan Tahr which occurs along the southern flanks of the Himalayas and the Arabian Tahr which inhabits the arid mountains of Sultanate of Oman. An estimated 700-800 Nilgiri Tahr inhabit Eravikulam National Park making it the largest wild population in the World. For eateries you can try this Kurunji restaurant just outside of the premises. It’s good and price is nominal. You will find mostly South Indian food along with some bakeries there. Also you will get to see few small shops inside the bus terminal. I personally love this place for its beauty. I will suggest to visit Eravikulam National park in weekdays or weekend morning to avoid crowds. So next time if you visit Munnar do visit this place and let me know your experience. See you in next video. Till then raise humanity and spread peace. |
