More Information: | Arignar Anna Zoological Park, also known as Vandalur Zoo, is one of the largest and most popular zoos in India, located in Vandalur, about 35 km southwest of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Key Highlights: Established: 1855 (originally in Madras), relocated to Vandalur in 1985. Area: The zoo spans approximately 602 hectares (1,490 acres), making it one of the largest zoological parks in South Asia. Animal Collection: As of 2022, the park houses around 2,389 animals across 178 species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Special Attractions: Lion Safari and Deer Safari Nocturnal Animal House Butterfly House Aquarium and Reptile House Eco-friendly transport: Battery-operated vehicles and bicycles available for visitors. Education & Conservation Efforts: The zoo serves as a captive breeding center for endangered species such as the Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, Nilgiri langur, and lion-tailed macaque. We thought we could cover the entire area in a single day, but we couldn’t, as it spans a huge area. However, it is truly a zoo worth visiting, especially for kids and nature lovers. The zoo is home to a wide variety of birds, animals, and fish, and you’ll also find an animal training ground. There is even a dark room for animals that live in low-light environments. Always carry water, a hat, full-sleeve clothing, and comfortable shoes with you. |
