Day by day the the variety of Madurkathi products has been increased as per people requirement and the products are getting spread out around the world. Madurkathi is a very eco friendly material which has been extracted from rhizome based plant which are found abundantly in rural area of Midnapur. The land and climate are pretty much favourable to grow these plants in that region. The people who are associated with this craft has reaped the rhizomes for 3-4 years and stored it. This craft has been originated in back to the Muslim period. In the dynasty of Nawab Alibardi Khan, mats were collected as revenue of the Jaigirdari system. Now a days 70% of population of Midnapur are into this profession. Most of the household women take initiative of weaving the mats and making various products. Main seasons for cutting the sticks are April-July and September-November. Best quality Madur sticks are reaped during the September-November season.
