How to go: | Get local train from Howrah, get down in Andul railway station, then take shared toto for Andul rajbari or others places. For Sankrail you have to get down to Sankrail railway station and you can walk around 3 km towards Rajganj ganga ghat beside Hoogly river, or put Lalit Lodge in google map, you will find the location. One can get toto from the railway station. Also you can get lot of local bus from many where in Kolkata for Andul. But bus journey can be a bit hectic and boring. One does not waste time at all. |

More Information: | Andul and Sankrail are two very busy, well known and old residential areas in Howrah. If you visit there in a regular day you will find yourself lost into the market. But due to some oldest mansions and zamindar houses, it carries some heritage. Among those Andul Rajbari is the one which is very famous for its huge pillar and amazing design which remains noticed to most of the history lovers. 60% of the house is abandoned and hardly accessible. But for photography it gives very rich content through out. History says Raja Rajnarayan Bahadur built this palace in 1834 and it was made by Granville Macleod company. The family now owns cinema halls and local markets. In front of the palace there is an open field which is used as a fair ground in few occasions. Another noticeable thing is adjacent Annapurna temple along with 14 Shiva temple. A famous Nahabatkhana on the top of the entrance of the temple is the landmark. There is a beautiful canon placed on the ground of the temple area which was used to gifted by Lord Clive. There are daily worship ritual goes on in these Shiva temples. The main festival of the temple is Annapurna puja and Chaitra Sankranthi. Apart from that Durga Puja is held in the Rajbari thakur dalan which is newly constructed besides the Rajbari area. There are another two Zamindars houses on the opposite side of the main road which can be visited by walk around 1.5 km. One is Kundu Choudhury mansion and another is Mahiari Roy house which is near by Kundu Choudhury's. By asking people or with the guidance of the Google map you can reach those places easily. Both are on walking distance. Durga Puja would be the best time to visit these mansions because that time people from outside are very much welcomed. Also the families take care and decorate the houses during that time. You can get chance to know the history from the family members who generally stays outside of the city and assembles there in this occasion. Another zamindars house resides in Sankrail, nearby the Rajgunj Ganga ghat which is around 3 km away from Sankrail railways station. In Google map you will find it by the name of Lalit lodge. But this is another mansion where Durga Puja held every year in a broader way. They paint the entire house and decorate it by lights before the festival. Rituals goes on throughout Dashera. Guests from outside are welcomed by the family members. Apart from that one can sit upon Rajgunj ghat and spend some quality time. So if you ever visit Andul and Sankrail during Durga Puja, you will return with full handed of good memories. Remember local toto can be the best option to reach out from one to another places. Remember accessing the local train to reach out the main destination is the best option. |
