| More Information: | Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram The Shore Temple is one of the most famous and oldest temples in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. It is located very close to the sea, which is why it is called the Shore Temple. This beautiful temple was built in the 8th century during the rule of Pallava king Narasimhavarman II. It is one of the earliest temples in South India made using large stone blocks instead of cutting rocks, which makes it very important in the history of Indian architecture. The temple has three shrines. Two of them are dedicated to Lord Shiva and one is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. In the Vishnu shrine, the god is shown in a sleeping position, which is a rare and peaceful form. The temple is built in traditional Dravidian style, with tall tower-like structures and detailed carvings on the walls.
