Primarily May to July in the Arctic breeding grounds

Nests on the ground in open tundra; shallow scrape lined with moss, grass, and lichens; clutch usually 3–4 eggs; both parents share duties

Breeds in Arctic tundra and moorlands; during migration and winter uses coastal mudflats, estuaries, sandy shores, mangroves, rocky coasts, and occasionally inland wetlands

Feeds on marine invertebrates such as crabs, mollusks, worms, and crustaceans; uses its long decurved bill to probe mud and sand; also takes insects, berries, and small fish when available
