Least Concern

Small, stocky finch-like bird about 11–12 cm long. Notable for its striking plumage — black head and breast, white belly, and rich chestnut upperparts. The short, thick conical bill is silvery-blue.

Resident species across much of India and South Asia.

Non-migratory, though some local movements occur depending on food and breeding conditions.

Typically June to December in India, coinciding with the monsoon and post-monsoon periods.

Constructs a ball-shaped nest made of grass blades in tall reeds, sugarcane fields, or dense shrubs near water. Often breeds in small colonies.

Found in grasslands, paddy fields, marsh edges, and agricultural areas; often near water bodies. Adapts well to human-modified landscapes.

Feeds primarily on grass seeds, especially of wild and cultivated species; occasionally consumes small insects during breeding.
