| Approximate size(adult): | Length about 35–38 cm; weight around 180–220 g. One of the largest kingfishers, with a massive red bill, greenish-blue wings and back, rufous head and underparts, and buff collar. Its loud, laughing call is distinctive.

| Resident/ Migrate from: | Resident species across South and Southeast Asia, including the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, and the Malay Peninsula.

| Migrate to: | Non-migratory, though it may make local seasonal movements along rivers and wetlands depending on water levels and prey availability.

| Breeding season: | Mainly February to July in India; varies slightly by region. Courtship includes aerial chases, calling, and food offerings by the male.

| Breed in: | Nests in riverbanks, earthen cliffs, or tree cavities, where it excavates a long tunnel leading to a nest chamber. Lays 2–5 white eggs, incubated by both parents.

| Habitat: | Found near rivers, lakes, estuaries, mangroves, and forested wetlands. Prefers areas with overhanging trees or shaded banks near water, but also seen in coastal regions and forest clearings.
