| Approximate size(adult): | Small quail measuring about 17–18 cm in length; compact body, short tail, and distinctive reddish bill and legs. Males are darker with a chestnut breast and black throat; females are paler.

| Resident/ Migrate from: | Resident species, found mainly in India and Sri Lanka, with no significant migratory movements.

| Migrate to: | Non-migratory, though may move locally within its range in response to seasonal vegetation and food availability.

| Breeding season: | Breeds mainly from February to October, with peak breeding after the onset of monsoon rains. The nest is a shallow ground scrape lined with grass and leaves, usually concealed in dense cover. Clutch typically contains 5–7 eggs.
