Least Concern

A medium-sized thrush, about 20–23 cm long. It has a bright orange head and underparts, grayish or bluish upperparts (depending on subspecies), and bold white wingbars. Sexes look similar, though females may appear duller.

Resident in southern India and Sri Lanka; migratory or altitudinal migrant in northern India and Southeast Asia. Northern populations move south in winter.

Peninsular India and Sri Lanka during winter from northern and Himalayan breeding grounds.

March to August in India; builds a cup-shaped nest of moss and roots on trees or ledges. Lays 2–4 eggs.

Moist broadleaf forests, shaded ravines, and dense undergrowth in foothills and montane regions.

Found in evergreen and deciduous forests, plantations, and well-wooded gardens; prefers shady, humid environments. Often forages on the ground, flipping leaf litter for insects.

Primarily insectivorous, feeding on insects, earthworms, snails, and small fruits or berries.
