Length about 40–45 cm; weight ~450–600 g. A large, elegant pigeon with glossy coppery-brown plumage, pale grey head and neck, and dark maroon wings and tail. The eyes are deep red, and the overall appearance is stately and rich-toned.
Resident/ Migrate from:
Resident and endemic to the Western Ghats of India, from southern Maharashtra through Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Non-migratory.
Migrate to:
Non-migratory; remains within its forested range year-round, though it may move locally following fruiting seasons.
Breeding season:
March to June, coinciding with the pre-monsoon months. Pairs perform soft cooing and display flights during courtship.
Breed in:
Builds a simple platform nest of twigs high in tall evergreen trees. Lays one, occasionally two, white eggs. Both parents share incubation and feeding duties.
Habitat:
Found in evergreen and moist deciduous forests of the Western Ghats, often in hilly or mountainous terrain up to about 1800 m elevation. Usually stays in the canopy and is shy and unobtrusive.
Diet:
