| Approximate size(adult): | Medium-sized fish eagle, about 60–70 cm in length; wingspan 120–160 cm. Smaller than the Grey-headed Fish Eagle, with brownish upperparts, grayish head and neck, and white underparts with some brown streaking. |
| Resident/ Migrate from: | Primarily resident, though may make local seasonal movements depending on water levels and fish availability. |
| Migrate to: | Does not make long-distance migrations; local dispersal to lower altitudes during monsoon or dry seasons. |
| Breeding season: | Breeding occurs mainly from February to July in South Asia; pairs reuse old nests built in tall riverside trees. |
| Breed in: | Large trees near rivers, lakes, or reservoirs across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Nests are typically platforms of sticks built high above water. |
| Habitat: | Inhabits forest-lined rivers, wetlands, and large freshwater bodies in hilly and lowland regions. Prefers undisturbed aquatic habitats with plenty of perching trees. |
| Diet: | Feeds mostly on fish, captured by swooping down from a perch; occasionally takes amphibians, reptiles, and small water birds. |
