| Approximate size(adult): | A small owl measuring 19–21 cm in length with a wingspan of 47–54 cm. It has cryptic brown-grey plumage, streaked and mottled to blend with tree bark, with prominent ear tufts.

| Resident/ Migrate from: | Breeds across Europe, the Middle East, and parts of western Asia. Northern populations are migratory.

| Migrate to: | Winters in sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia, and the Arabian Peninsula. Migration is mostly nocturnal and over long distances.
