Least Concern

Length about 17–20 cm; weight ~40–55 g. A small to medium-sized woodpecker with brownish upperparts barred with white, buff underparts with dark streaks, and a yellow crown patch (more prominent in males). The tail is black with white markings.

Resident species found across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and parts of Pakistan. Non-migratory.

Non-migratory; remains within its home range year-round.

February to June in India, peaking during spring. Courtship involves drumming, calls, and chasing displays.

Nests in tree cavities excavated by the pair, often in soft or dead wood. Lays 3–5 eggs, incubated by both parents. Both feed the chicks until fledging.

Found in dry deciduous forests, open woodlands, groves, and even urban parks and gardens. Prefers areas with old trees suitable for nesting and foraging.

Feeds on insects, larvae, ants, beetles, and termites, extracted from bark and wood. Also consumes fruits and tree sap occasionally. Forages by pecking and probing tree trunks and branches.
