Least Concern

A small sandpiper, about 13–15 cm long with a wingspan of 32–35 cm. It has brownish upperparts, white underparts, and distinctive white outer tail feathers visible in flight.

Breeds in northern Eurasia, including Scandinavia, northern Russia, and Siberia. Migrates southward after breeding.

Winters in South and Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Africa. Common winter visitor to wetlands and paddy fields across the Indian subcontinent.

May to July, during the northern summer. Nests on the ground near freshwater lakes or marshes, often in tundra or taiga regions.

Northern Europe and Siberia, mainly in arctic and subarctic zones.

During winter, found in freshwater marshes, wet fields, ponds, and muddy edges of lakes and rivers. Prefers shallow, still waters over coastal mudflats.

Feeds mainly on small invertebrates, including insects, larvae, worms, and crustaceans, which it picks actively from the surface of mud or shallow water.
