Near Threatened

A small passerine bird about 14–15 cm long. It has a dark bluish upper body, rufous-brown flanks, and a greyish underside. The tail is short and rounded. Males are brighter blue, while females are duller with a greyer tone.

Resident species, endemic to the Western Ghats of southern India. It does not migrate outside its limited range.

Non-migratory, though it may make local altitudinal movements between shola forests and adjoining grasslands.

Breeds between March and June. The nest is a moss-lined cup built close to the ground in thick vegetation, often concealed among roots or rocks. Usually lays 2–3 eggs.

Restricted to high-altitude shola forests of the Nilgiri Hills, Anamalai Hills, and Palani Hills. Prefers moist, dense undergrowth and forest interiors.

Found in montane evergreen forests (sholas) interspersed with grasslands, typically between 1,200–2,400 meters altitude. It forages close to the ground in leaf litter and low shrubs.

Feeds primarily on insects, beetles, spiders, and small invertebrates. Occasionally consumes small berries. Hunts by gleaning prey from foliage and ground cover.
