Least Concern

Length about 13–15 cm; weight ~15–20 g. A small, active bird with a glossy black head, throat, and neck; white cheeks; grey upperparts; and whitish underparts with a broad black belly stripe.

Resident species found across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia; generally non-migratory, though it may move locally depending on food availability.

Non-migratory; remains within its range throughout the year. Some local altitudinal movements occur in hilly regions.

February to June, coinciding with warmer months and insect abundance. Pairs are monogamous during the breeding period.

Nests in tree holes, wall crevices, nest boxes, or building cavities. The female lays 4–6 eggs, which are incubated for about two weeks. Both parents feed the chicks.

Found in open forests, gardens, wooded farmlands, and urban areas. Adaptable to a variety of habitats, including human settlements with tree cover.

Primarily insectivorous, feeding on caterpillars, beetles, spiders, and other small invertebrates. Also eats seeds, fruits, and nectar, especially outside the breeding season.
